SEIU Local 509 is hiring a Deputy Communications Director to support the union’s strategic internal and external communications programs. This position requires a proactive, goal-focused strategic thinker who will assist in the implementation of key initiatives that advance the organizing and public policy goals of human service workers and educators throughout the Commonwealth.
The Deputy Director works with the Senior Communications Director, union leadership team and other staff to advance plans, timelines and materials that support and drive a range of short- and long-term objectives. S/he is based in our Marlborough, Massachusetts (Boston/Metro West) office, though some travel is required.
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Help to protect and advance Local 509’s brand as a leading advocate for quality services, family-supporting jobs and strong communities
Support general message development around key issues and campaigns
Assist in design and production of written and online materials, including those for the Organizing, Political and Field Services departments
Curate and enhance content for the union's website and social media properties — including Twitter, Facebook and YouTube
Engage in outreach to journalists and bloggers to generate positive media coverage on behalf of the union, its members and causes
Train members and staff on best practices in communication technology
Bilingual candidates will play a role in engaging Spanish media outlets — and may assist with translation needs, where applicable
Other duties as assigned
4+ years experience in a communications or new media role with a union, progressive candidate/elected official or grassroots organization (or comparable experience in the field of journalism or marketing)
Strong verbal and written communication skills, with demonstrable success conveying key messages through visual mediums
Understanding of the contemporary media landscape and current communications strategies and tactics
Ability to design basic print and web materials (using, Quark, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Publisher, etc.)
Working knowledge of common content management programs (such as WordPress) and social media tools
Proficiency with photo and/or video equipment and editing software (Photoshop, Light Room, iMovie, Final Cut, etc.)
HTML familiarity and basic web design skills a plus
Experience pitching journalists, bloggers and editors a plus
Commitment to the labor movement and overall progressive social change
Ability to work under pressure, both independently and part of a team
Willingness to work long and irregular hours, including nights and weekends
Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills are a plus
The Deputy Director works under the union’s Senior Director of Communications — who review work for effectiveness, timeliness, accuracy and conformance with relevant rules and regulations.
SALARY & BENEFITS
This is a union bargaining unit position with a salary range of $63,924 – $73,030, depending on experience. SEIU Local 509 offers a generous benefits package, including car allowance.
