Company: Congressman James P. McGovern
Job description:
District Press Assistant
The Office of Congressman Jim McGovern is seeking a dynamic, detail-oriented District Press Assistant to join a fast-paced, high-energy team. As Congressman McGovern’s District Press Assistant, you will get hands-on experience in nearly every part of a congressional communications operation and will be in charge of photography and videography at all district events. Our ideal candidate cares deeply about local and national politics, has strong creative instincts, and understands that good district communications is about more than creating good content—it requires knowing who is in the room, understanding local organizations and elected officials, building trust with stakeholders, and recognizing the moments that tell the story of the Congressman’s work on behalf of the people of Massachusetts. This is an ideal role for someone who wants a career in political communications and is eager to both contribute to and learn from a seasoned, collaborative, hardworking strategic communications team.
Your other duties will include compiling and distributing daily press clips, sending out the Congressman’s media advisories and public schedules, helping to draft the Congressman’s newsletter, and working with district staff to help plan press conferences and other media-focused events. This position will be based out of Congressman McGovern’s Worcester, Massachusetts office. You must live in, or be willing to relocate to, the Second Congressional District. You will often need to drive the Congressman to events—requiring access to a reliable vehicle and a willingness to work outside standard office hours, including nights and weekends.
Your Core Responsibilities:
- Capture photos and videos of events for digital platforms, including attending events with the Congressman, drafting copy for social media posts, and managing the storage of content and its transfer to the rest of the communications team.
- Driving the Congressman to events in and around the Second District.
- Helping to draft media advisories, public schedules, and e-newsletters on behalf of the communications team.
- Helping to manage the Congressman’s website, clip videos of floor and committee remarks, maintain press lists, and disseminate media advisories and releases in advance of local events.
- Assisting in the planning and execution of media events in the district.
Our Preferred Qualifications:
- A strong familiarity with Massachusetts politics, including an understanding of state and local stakeholders and a deep desire to learn more about the Second Congressional District.
- An excellent grasp of photography and video production, including an eye for creative content and a strong technical understanding of the principles of photographic composition like lighting, exposure, focus, and timing.
- Good editorial judgement and the ability to compose social media content under pressure, including working directly with the Congressman to ensure that content reflects his priorities as well as the overall communications strategy of the office.
- Someone who is detailed-oriented, highly-motivated, and a self-starter who works well under tight deadlines.
Candidates who live in or are willing to relocate to Massachusetts are strongly preferred. Starting salary is $55,000. Qualified candidates should submit a brief cover letter, a resume, and a writing sample to NewEnglandResumes@mail.house.gov with “District Press Assistant 2026” as the subject line.
